Hundreds of Afghan-Australians, a majority of whom were young people, marched through the CBD to the steps of Parliament House on August 29, chanting “Free, free Afghanistan!” and “Silence is violence”.

The protesters called on the federal government to do more to help Afghans trying to escape the country, including lifting the humanitarian intake from 3000 to 20,000, and to give permanent residency to those already here but still on temporary visas.
