Bells tolled for children in detention

Issue

SYDNEY — On June 10, refugee-rights group ChilOut marked the passing of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission's deadline for children and their parents to be released from immigration detention.

In Sydney, 500 people rallied and tolled bells for the children who are still locked up. In Melbourne, 162 pairs of children's shoes were placed on the footpath outside the immigration department's office. Actions also took place in Port Macquarie, Bega, Lismore, Toowoomba and Port Augusta.
