Why

With the Blockade getting close, it's the perfect time to get out on the water, build confidence, and prepare together.

Join us for a full and fun day featuring:

  • Water safety and kayaking training on sheltered waters
  • A Kaurna Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony
  • A BYO picnic lunch with time to connect
  • A mini flotilla group paddle out
  • Optional assisted rescue training for those keen to go deeper

What's provided

  • Kayaks (mostly singles and some doubles available)
  • Life jackets and paddles
  • Qualified kayaking trainers
  • Onshore First Aid support at all times

Training will be run in small groups based on experience (6 people per trainer) to ensure it’s safe, supportive, and fun.

Facilities

Paddle SA are providing us with access to their:

  • Accessible toilets & changerooms
  • Hot showers
  • Kitchen with tea & coffee facilities
  • Large air-conditioned indoor space

There are also nearby areas of grass, shade, trees, shelters, electric BBQ's and (depending on tide) a sandy shore.

What to bring

  • Hat and sunscreen
  • Footwear suitable for paddling (e.g. Crocs, wetsuit booties)
  • Swimmers and rashie
  • Towel and dry change of clothes
  • Water bottle and reusable cup
  • Picnic lunch
  • Asthma medication or EpiPen if required
  • (Optional) Wetsuit or extra swimmers and rashie if joining the assisted rescue training
  • (Optional) BYO kayak or stand up paddle board with paddle and life jacket if you have one

Registration & cost

RSVP essential. Cost is $25 per adult or pay what you can, if you can, to help cover hire costs. Free for First Nations people, under 18s, and Centrelink recipients.

Places are limited so please book in as soon as you can. Priority will be given to those who are coming to the Blockade this year.

Algal bloom situation

  • West Lakes is being tested and monitored weekly
  • At this point algal levels are low
  • Latest information can be found at: www.algalbloom.sa.gov.au
  • We will update you if the situation changes
  • We are exploring alternative locations just in case

This event will be held on Kaurna Country, and we pay our respects to First Nations people everywhere.
