A march through the CBD on April 15 protested the recent violent Israeli attacks on Palestinian worshippers at Al Aqsa Mosque by Israeli occupation forces.
Nick Riemer, a Palestine solidarity activist and branch president of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) at the University of Sydney called on the Labor government to “side with the oppressed against the oppressors” and condemn the violent attacks by the Israeli occupiers.
The demonstration was organised by the Palestine Action Group Sydney (PAGS). It said the latest act of violence against Palestinians during the holy month of Ramadan had taken place in the context of escalating violence by the Israeli occupation forces.
“The Israeli government has escalated its rhetoric of dispossession and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their land, with the Israeli finance minister calling for Palestinian villages to be ‘wiped out’,” PAGS said.
Palestinian community organisations sent a letter to the federal government on April 13 which said: “The actions of Israel have received world-wide condemnation, and we emphasise that this world-wide condemnation was even adopted by the USA administration, Israel’s main benefactor. By comparison the response of your government has been deafeningly muted.”
