Independent MP for Wollondilly Judy Hannan was recognised for improving the position of elected female representatives by winning the Women of Local Government Elected Representative – Metro award on October 4.
“It’s the little things that I’ve been able to help people with that has made so much of a difference,” Hannan said. She cited assistance to local businesses and individuals as her most gratifying achievements.
Hannan continues to fight to save the increasingly endangered koalas, better bushfire planning and management and keeping over-development out of her own community.
She said she hoped women would make up more than half of all elected MPs. “We have a way to go and today we are in a much better place than before.”
Hannan has been a councillor and Mayor of Wollondilly and an Australian Local Government Women’s Association NSW representative.
Hannan provides training and mentoring for many young women interested in becoming candidates for office. A women’s forum she organised brought together approximately 30 women to run for council positions.
Hannan is undertaking valuable work in trying to save koala corridors, campaigning against new coal and gas, and questioning inactive mining licences.
