Anti-tollway activists are disappointed that the Greens councillors seem to have accepted the North East Link is a fait accompli, writes Mary Merkenich.

Mary Merkenich reports that four councils in Melbourne’s north east are taking legal action against the state government over its support for the $16 billion North East Link tollway.

The Victorian Labor government is proposing to widen Melbourne’s Eastern Freeway to more than 20 lanes, arguing this would ease congestion on a thoroughfare that resembles a car park during peak time.

The Victorian road lobby is at it again. Fresh from being defeated on the East-West Link, the rent-seeking tollroad builders have been given a construction gift in the form of a massive new project in Melbourne’s east.

Protest against the North East Link

The Victorian Labor government announced on April 15 that it would fast-track the controversial North East Link, a 26-kilometre freeway to connect the Metropolitan Ring Road at Greensborough with the Eastern Freeway at Bulleen.
