“This place is like a war zone,” wrote Behrouz Boochani, an Iranian journalist locked up in the Manus Island detention centre, as he exhaustedly began to describe the situation on November 2 – day 2 of the “Manus Island siege”.

The sackings come after the awarding of a 25-year stevedoring contract covering PNG's main ports, to a notoriously anti-union Filipino company, International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI).

Reclaim The Night is an annual event held to protest all forms of violence against women.

This year’s RTN rallies were held against a backdrop of rising student activism following the release of the Human Rights Commission report on campus sexual assault, the defunding and outsourcing of women-centred rape crisis services and specialised women’s refuges, and the worldwide #MeToo social media campaign that exposed the prevalence of sexual harassment.
