RESTORE DEMOCRACY IN QLD! RALLY & MARCH to repeal VLAD (and other anti-democratic legislation)

King George Square, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia 4000

For the first parliamentary sitting day of 2014!
Recently, the Newman government has pushed through a raft of legislation that has attacked the foundations of the rule of law and freedoms that are vital for any modern Democracy.

This rally is being held in order to spread public awareness about these oppressive new laws and to kick off the Queensland Civil Liberties Network's campaign to restore our fundamental civil liberties.

“The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.”

This event is being held on Tuesday the 11th of February, the first day of sitting Parliament for the new year, so we can let this out-of-control government know that we won't take this lying down!

Starting in King George Square, there will be a number of speakers discussing the details and impacts of these new laws, which will then be followed by a march to Parliament House where we will have more speakers sending a message to the sitting Parliament and finally we will enjoy some live music to finish off the day.

More details will be available soon!

In classic diversionary tactics, the Newman Government has pushed through these attacks upon our freedoms in various pieces of legislation.

While we seek to stand up for our fundamental democratic rights and principals, the Queensland Civil Liberty Networks is demanding that the Newman government:

* Restore the Rule of Law in Queensland

* End the attacks upon our civil liberties under the guise of a crackdown on "bikies"

* Repeals the Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment Act 2013 ("VLAD") and the "Criminal Organisations Disruption" Amendment Act 2013

In combination, the two pieces of legislation above provide the Queensland Police and Government the power to attack our fundamental human right of Freedom of Association, as required by Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a document that Australia is a proud signatory to. For more details on these laws:

* Repeal the "Out-of-control Parties Laws"

*Scrap plans to strip electricians who are past or present members of a declared "Criminal Gang" of their license to practice their profession.

* Restore the independence of the Crime and Misconduct Commission and ends the political appointments to the Judiciary and vital democratic institutions.
