ZIMBABWE: March commemorates AIDS day

Issue

Five-hundred AIDS activists marched through central Harare on May 19 to commemorate International AIDS Memorial Day. A street demonstration is a rare event in Zimbabwe and marchers made the most of the opportunity to call for increased access to treatment drugs. More than 3000 people die each week in Zimbabwe due to AIDS-related illnesses. Half of the 175,000 new infections in 2005 were among 15-24-year-olds, and most of those were female.
