Young activists call day of action

By Sean Malloy

The youth activist organisation, Resistance, is planning a national day of action on March 8 to highlight the Labor and Liberal attacks on young people's rights and living standards.

"The Liberal Party and the Labor Party both have policies which cut young people's wages and have no real solutions to overcrowding in education", said Zanny Begg, a Resistance member and Democratic Socialist candidate in the seat of Wentworth.

Resistance plans to have an event in every capital city in the country and will be presenting copies of its recently published Youth Manifesto to ALP and Liberal leaders.

"The Youth Manifesto outlines a real alternative", said Jorge Jorquera, national coordinator of Resistance. "The ALP and the Liberal Party don't offer a choice, but they are creating conditions where more young people will be living on or under the poverty line."

Wollongong Resistance will be asking all federal election candidates in the Illawarra area to fill out and return a survey on youth issues to determine which candidates best represent young people.

"What we need to do is build an alternative to ALP and Liberal politics", says Begg. "Unless we organise ourselves, we are always going to be at the mercy of ALP and Liberal backwardness."
