Words against war

Issue

BY JO ELLIS

ADELAIDE — A group of local writers organised an anti-war poetry reading after the massive rally on February 16. Entitled Bang/Whimper, the event was held at an appropriately named venue, the Worldsend Hotel.

It featured 10 writers including Eva Sallis and Juan Garido Salgado. Proceeds were donated to CARE Australia, an aid organisation operating in Iraq.

Adelaide is experiencing an increase in political poetry. At another recent reading, one poet introduced a poem by saying that he didn't normally write anything political but was inspired by "some kids selling badges in the mall".
