Western hypocrisy hit

By Martin Iltis

MELBOURNE — A speak-out against the Balkans war on April 9 was chaired by Resistance organiser Kerryn Williams, who explained that the United States and other Western powers are hypocritical when they claim their actions are in support of Kosovar human rights. They have always opposed self-determination for Kosova and overlooked continued human rights abuses by the Serbian government.

Williams concluded that the real reasons for the US-NATO bombings were to maintain US control in the region for its business interests, to provide another ideological justification for US militarism and its self-appointed role as the world's policeman and to facilitate the disarming of the Kosova Liberation Army (KLA).

How to solve the crisis was taken up by Susan Price from the Democratic Socialist Party. She stated that Kosova must be enabled to defend itself. The West should not enforce an arms embargo on the KLA.

So far the West has spent massively more on its military campaign than it has on providing assistance to the Kosovar refugees. Price concluded that the West has a moral obligation to finance the rebuilding of the homes and infrastructure in Kosova.

Speakers also condemned the Australian government and the Labor opposition for their support of the NATO bombings.
