The Socialist Alliance National Council voted on June 30 to encourage its members and supporters to support of the September 20 climate strike and put motions along the following lines to their trade unions and other community-based organisations.

The School Strike 4 Climate has asked adults worldwide to come out onto the streets alongside them and make our voices heard.

To do that we too must strike for climate action. We must break with business as usual, leave our workplaces and rally with the students.

Yes, we will then cross a line. The rules do not let us strike when we want, for what we need. The rules must be changed.

To change the rules, we now need to break the rules. We must act to demand climate action.

If we do so in numbers we have a chance. The students are counting on us. We can count on them, when we stand with them.

We need everyone.

The students are showing leadership. They are acting for our future. They are contributing to the larger fight.

As Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and the students have said: To change everything, we need everyone.

Across the planet, Green New Deals are being proposed. We must act to protect the future and to demand a just transition for workers and communities.

Collective action works. Mass resistance can make change. Let us unleash the power of workers and students in action.

Together, we can meet the climate emergency. Strike for climate action on September 20.
