Welch wins in Marrickville

Bruce Welch became the first person to be elected as a Green in Sydney in elections to the Marrickville Council on September 14.

The ALP has lost control of the council for the first time in over 30 years.

Welch will be joined on council by Sonia Laverty from the New Left Party who was elected as a Community Independent.

It is not yet clear who will become the new mayor. The balance of councillors are small business independents.

Said Welch, "The main aim of the Greens is to have real community participation in the decisions of council, not just the lip service the idea is given by the Labor Party and other independents".
