Webster protest

MELBOURNE — Members and supporters of the Campaign for Women's Reproductive Rights protested at a forum in East Bentleigh at which NSW Liberal anti-abortion MP Alisdair Webster was speaking on June 6.

Webster, who currently has a private member's bill before federal parliament, is associated with a cross-party anti-choice grouping. His Abortion Funding Abolition Bill seeks to remove Medicare rebates for abortion.

CWRR has been mobilising against Webster's bill since it was first introduced late last year.

"When Medicaid funding for abortion services was cut in the USA, women began to die again at the hands of cheap backyard butchers because they simply could not afford a safe, legal abortion", said CWRR spokesperson Alison Thorne. "Rosie Jiminez, a young Chicana mother, was the first to die in this way."
