PERTH — Alarm at the federal government's proposed cuts to higher education funding has led to a dramatic increase in student activism in Perth.

On August 7, students will join with members of the National Tertiary Education Industry Union and the Commonwealth and Public Sector Union at a rally to protest the government's plans. Students will take part in a combined unions rally on August 19 and a post-budget action on August 29, initiated by the National Union of Students.

Other actions have also been planned, including a joint high school and university speak-out on August 16 and a budget vigil on August 20.

Left activists on Curtin University and the University of WA are also planning to contest student guild elections to build the campaigns opposing funding cuts and voluntary student unionism legislation, and for democratic student representation.
