Viennese housing

By Pete Malatesta

SYDNEY — Brought to Australia by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the City of Vienna, "New Housing in Vienna" is an exhibition of Viennese housing since the 1920s showing at the Tin Sheds Gallery, 154 City Road, Sydney.

Social housing plays the most important role in Viennese city developments. On display are a variety of architectural solutions of the 1980s.

The tradition and development of Viennese architecture are shown by examples of super blocks (closed and structured buildings with inner courtyards) and settlements of "Red Vienna", the interwar period from 1918-1934, and selected buildings of the last decades.

The exhibition is free and runs until September 8. The gallery hours are Monday to Friday 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday to Sunday 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
