US victimising Gulf War opponents

Twenty-one US Marine Corp reservists who refused to take part in the Gulf War are being subject to all forms of maltreatment while in detention, according to the news service of the Paris-based organisation Resisters Inside the Army (RITA).

Those who have already been court-martialled have received prison terms of between nine months and two-and-a-half years.

The reservists have been deprived of sleep, kept in solitary, forced to say "I am shit" for hours on end, given excessive detail and forbidden access to reading material and correspondence.

According to RITA, the Marine Corps seems determined "to punish severely all those who questioned the legitimacy of the war".

Messages of support and protest should be sent to: Hands Off Committee, 111 East 14th St (Room 132), New York, NY 10003, USA. Fax: 212 598 91 03.
