UNITED STATES: Union donates to strikers

Issue

The United Auto Workers has presented a gift of US$880,000 to members of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association, who are on strike in protest at the union-busting efforts of Northwest Airlines. More than 4400 workers have been striking since August 20. Northwest proposed laying off more than half of the AMFA members and cutting the remaining workers' salaries by 25%. At the same time, the airline spent over $100 million training 1300 scabs.
