Big steps campaign to escalate
United Voice, the union covering early childhood educators, announced on May 27 the result of a ballot of more than 3000 educators on whether to escalate their equal pay campaign.
The union said 95% of educators voted to take action on equal pay with sector-wide walk-offs later this year.
The move follows similar action on International Women's Day, when about 1000 workers walked off the job across Australia.
The union says educators are paid less than men with similar qualifications because of an outdated notion that childcare is viewed as "women's work in the home".
ExxonMobil using CUB tactics against workers
The ETU, AMWU and AWU are preparing a major campaign against ExxonMobil and its contractor UGL as the companies begin employing the same tactics as CUB used its six-month self-declared “war” on its maintenance workers.
UGL, with ExxonMobil's permission, set up a shelf company and told oil and gas workers in the Bass Strait they now work for the new company.
It then got random workers in WA to vote for a dodgy enterprise agreement that cut workers’ wages by 30% and told the Bass Strait workers if they wanted to keep their jobs they had to accept the new EA.
