SYDNEY — Promoting a petition to have the United Nations reword the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to substitute "all women and men" with "all people", Kate Walker, the transgender support worker with the Women's and Girls' Emergency Centre (WAGEC) in Surry Hills, told Green Left Weekly: "It is vital that the rights of gender-variant persons, such as transsexuals, be protected in the charter the same as non-gender-variant persons."

Walker pointed out that "the 2006 national Private Lives report shows that personal experiences of discrimination, harassment and violence experienced by transgendered persons still remains significantly higher than in the general population".
