Timorese student killed

According to Portuguese press reports, on May 18 East Timorese student Filomeno dos Santos, 26 years old, died in prison in Dili after being tortured for several hours by three Indonesian intelligence agents.

Family members of the victim were afterwards interrogated and subject to house searches, and were threatened they would be killed if they divulged the circumstances under which the youth's death occurred.

Filomeno dos Santos was detained together with 13 other students two days after a peaceful demonstration on January 9 at the University of East Timor in Dili in support of the UN East Timor initiatives, for allegedly having organised the demonstration.
