In this third series, through my work I explore the position of perpetrators in the ‘65 Tragedy (The Indonesian Mass Killings of 1965), their acts of cruelty and their motives. It also can be understood as an introspective searching into the depths of our dark desires, mine, yours, our friends or family. Because these perpetrators were not aliens who lived for only 2 hours long in a Hollywood thriller movie with its fictional violence, rather they were historical human beings just like us, who committed real acts of violence, that spilled real blood of real human beings, but who also hold potential goodness as much as we might. In another different situation they have been humane and kind people, just like others we know who are good and kind people.
The process of creating this work has led me to believe that there are some acts of violence and cruelty that may be left in the past as they have been resolved. However there are many more atrocities that must be continuously exposed because they have never been dealt with as the crimes against humanity that they are. Moreover these atrocities have been claimed to be acts of goodness and virtue. Consequently perpetrators have never been held to account for their wickedness, but rather held up as heroes and their evil deeds acknowledged hypocritically by our society.
