SYDNEY — The postal workers' union (APTU) has rejected Australia Post plans to close down many post offices and replace them with "modern retail outlets". The union is particularly concerned about planned closures in country centres.

WOLLONGONG — Mining unions at Austen and Bhutta's South Bulli colliery are negotiating after management announced 120 lay-offs on October 15. The pit was hit by an explosion that killed three mineworkers last July. If the lay-offs proceed, it is unlikely there will be enough workers willing to take voluntary redundancy packages.
