Sydney Slutwalk - nobody deserves to be raped or assaulted

Monday, June 13, 2011 - 14:00

"Slutwalk" began after a Toronto Police representative put the responsibility for assault and rape of young women on the way that they dressed or acted, saying they should not walk around "like sluts". Yet rape and assault - which occurs overwhelmingly in dwellings and by people known to the victim, not by shadowy figures in dark alleys - is not about what a women wears or even sex. Rape is about power and the treatment of women as second class citizens. Come to Slutwalk to oppose the blaming of women for their own assault, and to fight for an end to rape and abuse and for women to be treated as equal human beings.

Originally slated to go through Newtown, numbers quickly swelled to such an extent that a second plan was devised. The SlutWalk will now start at the Town Hall, then head past the Downing Centre courts, and finish in Harmony Park, near Surry Hills police station.
