SYDNEY About 270 people attended the annual Green Left Weekly dinner on September 16. The theme for the night was Liberation, in particular focused on the Asia Pacific region. Speakers included Alico Santos, a Fretilin activist and Dili massacre survivor, Moses Havini from the Bougainville Interim Government and Lisa Macdonald, Green Left Weekly journalist. The Cuban consul, Marcelino Fajardo, was a special guest.
A highlight was the musical and theatrical performance by the East Timor Cultural Centre dancers. Other entertainment included the Resistance Choir, Newcastle folk musician Alex Bainbridge and dance band Society.
The night was a great political and financial success, raising over $2000 for Green Left Weekly. Special thanks to supporters who have helped make this annual event a very important part of the Sydney left calendar.
