The fight continues for two Woodville high school students who were taken from their community to a detention centre in Darwin in June.

On June 26, two young asylum seekers came home from their school and were approached moments later by the immigration department and taken to a closed detention centre in Darwin. Since then, fifteen other asylum seekers have fled from the community out of fear.

The fight to bring them home safely continues with a movement run by Woodville High School and workers in the community, as thousands protested at parliament house on August 2.

The steps of Parliament were decorated with briefcase cutouts labelled “suitcase full of dreams”. Students from Woodville High gave moving speeches, Greens senator Sarah Hansen-Young also spoke.

Students have recorded an original song called “Bring Them Home” to raise awareness of the campaign. Woodville High student Kyle Rigney and former student Neo Pitso performed it at the rally.

A march to government house followed. The support for the campaign, known as Two Too Many, is ongoing through a petition and the Facebook group where more actions to come will be announced.
