In October of last year the Turnbull Government re-introduced a bill before the Senate titled “Inquiry into Social Services Legislation Amendment (Welfare Reform) Bill.” This widely condemned bill seeks to reform the government's current (and already cruel) welfare system with many punitive provisions and the introduction of a ‘demerit point scheme’.
It looks like the controversial trial involving random drug testing of thousands of Centrelink recipients receiving Newstart and Youth Allowance will be left out of any deal between the Xenophon Team and the government, but that’s just the tip of the ice-berg....
...Xenophon has engineered a few paltry concessions that allow him to play a role as a “negotiator” and a “pragmatist” who “gets things done” and is “above politics and ideology”.
However, he is ACTUALLY trading in the pain and suffering of welfare recipients in a bid to acquire more political capital in his quest to become Premier...
