Speakers at a 100-strong solidarity rally in Brisbane on August 17 opposed the Indian government’s crackdown on Kashmir which began on August 5, including sending in the military and blocking all communications.

In a media statement, rally organiser Jamshid said: "The Modi government's crackdown on the people of Kashmir and the unilateral rejection of article 370 needs to be condemned all around the world. "We are calling for an end to the communications blockade in Kashmir, including restoration of internet and phone services.

"We are also calling for the restoration of article 370 of the Indian constition and a UN sponsored plebiscite.

"The people of Kashmir need a genuine opportunity to determine their own destiny."
