Socialists against the war

The following statement was signed in Rome on January 26 by the Socialist Party (USSR), Democratic Socialist Party (Australia) and Left Alternative (Hungary).

We, representatives of left-wing socialist organisations meeting to discuss the prospects for a new socialist project, resolve that the war in the Persian Gulf between Iraq and the coalition led by the United States is an imperialist war and a crime against the peoples of the region.

Having no sympathy with the repressive regime of Saddam Hussein, we see this war as an attempt by the United States to rebuild and strengthen its position of strength and supremacy in the region and the world.

We will do all we can to encourage struggle against the war and will continue the contacts among us to develop a united position and cooperate on this issue.

Each organisation will pursue its own ways and means of struggle against the war according to the situation in its country, its own ideological traditions and analysis.
