Socialist Ideas discussion: From burqa bans to raunch culture - the struggle for women's liberation today

Saturday, October 30, 2010 - 14:00 to 16:00

While forces from Fred Nile through to some on the Left call for "banning the burqa" for supposed liberation, just how emancipated are 21st century Australian women? Women do most of the unpaid work in the home; earn just 66% of the male wage; lack affordable child care; 1-in-4 suffer domestic violence; abortion remains illegal in most states; and problems such as poverty disproportionately effect women.

On top of and reinforcing this, a massive industry of sexist media and advertising turns women into nothing more than commodities. A new aspect of this is "raunch culture", which promotes itself as liberating women's sexuality.

Come to a discussion on women in 21st century Australia, from the burqa hysteria to raunch culture, and how we need to confront sexism as part of the struggle for a better world.

The latest in a regular series of Socialist Ideas discussions hosted by Socialist Alliance and Resistance. All welcome!
