Socialist campaign launched

By Frank Noakes

SYDNEY — The Democratic Socialist Electoral League 1993 federal election campaign was launched here on January 3 with a panel of candidates outlining some of the basic issues central to mounting a green left alternative to economic rationalism and breaking the two party electoral system. More than 200 people attended the launch.

But the Democratic Socialist campaign will actually kick off in the WA state election on February 6, with candidates being fielded in Perth and Fremantle.

The socialists will field candidates in each state in the forthcoming federal election, said Dave Holmes, a spokesperson. In Queensland, Susan Price will contest the seat of Brisbane. Last September, Price picked up 9.2% of the primary vote in the state election, standing in Brisbane Central.

Other Democratic Socialist candidates will be announced shortly, Holmes told Green Left Weekly.
