Sarah Hathway and Sue Bull are contesting the Brownbill ward in Geelong.

The Socialist Alliance is the first party to nominate women candidates for Geelong's upcoming local council elections.

Sue Bull, a health and safety teacher, committed trade unionist and previous candidate for Socialist Alliance has been pre-selected, along with Sarah Hathway, a Deakin University student and 2014 state election candidate.

Bull ran for Mayor in 2012 and received more than 10,000 first preference votes. “The result showed that residents respond to progressive and democratic policies at a local level. They are sick of pro-developer policies that put profits before people and candidates who are more interested in their own careers than serving the community,” she said.

Hathway who has been closely involved in establishing Geelong Rainbow Inc, said: “I’m excited about Geelong’s 30-year plan for the future. I think Geelong can be a clever and creative city.

“But to do that we need new faces and new ideas on local council. We need women, young people, LGBTIQ people, people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and members from the Wadda Wurrung community playing a leadership role. We need councillors prepared to advocate for this community on all sorts of issues.”

Bull and Hathway will both be contesting the Brownbill Ward where they both live.
