SHOCKFACTS: Education funding

Issue 

  • Share of federal funding to public schools went from 73.7% in 1964-65, to 33.3% in 2005-06. During the same period, the share of federal funding to private schools went from 26.3% to 66.7%.

  • Direct federal funding to private schools was $2.7 million in 1964-65, $1,858.9 million in 1995-96, $4,420.0 million in 2003-2004 and will be $5,091.0 million in 2005-2006.

  • Public school enrolments made up 80.5% of total school enrolments in Australia in 1901-1910, 75.6% in 1941-50, 78.5% in 1981-1990 and 71.0% in 1991-99
