Shire opposes nuclear reactor

PERTH — The Kalamunda Shire council, which covers some of the outer suburbs east of Perth, has written to Stuart Henry, Liberal MHR for the seat of Hasluck, to express its opposition to the location of any nuclear reactor within the shire. This follows the leaking earlier this month of a 1997 federal cabinet submission listing possible locations for a nuclear research reactor.

Henry publicly backed away from the plan by telling the local press that the sites are no longer under consideration. However, he spoke in support of nuclear power in general and for sites on the coast or in remote inland locations.
