Save public housing in Glebe

More than 100 people protested against the New South Wales Gladys Berejiklian Coalition government's plan to bulldoze 112 public housing dwellings in Glebe, in the inner west, on January 30.

The buildings in question are sound, only 30 years old, and have even won design awards for their amenity.

The NSW government has promised that the units will be replaced by a new development with a 30% public and a 70% private mix, and says that that this will be a gain for all.

However, as Hands Off Glebe spokesperson Denis Doherty, pointed out, this will not be a "gain" for those living in this public housing complex as they are forced out of their homes into temporary accommodation away from their friends, family, doctor and schools.

Balmain Greens MP Jamie Parker told the crowd that this was "a very winnable campaign" if the community kept up the pressure in the streets.

Doherty said there was so much interest in saving public housing that several groups were working together and he invited more to join.

The next rally for public housing organised by Friends of Erskineville is on February 13 at 12noon.
