Salvadoran left announces candidates

By Stephen Marks

MANAGUA — The first National Convention of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front has endorsed Ruben Zamora and Francisco Lima as the presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the March 20 1994 elections in El Salvador, reports the Nicaraguan daily Barricada.

Zamora is a representative for Democratic Convergence, an alliance of three left-wing parties in El Salvador's Congress. Lima, a lawyer, represents a group of progressive business people.

FMLN leader Shafick Handal pledged support to the candidates at an enthusiastic convention rally of 7000 people in San Salvador on September 5, under a large banner which declared "Victory 94". While many international observers were present at the convention, the government refused to allow a Cuban delegation to attend.

These are the first candidates to be officially announced for the elections, in which 84 Congress deputies and 262 Municipal councils will also be chosen.
