S11 Alliance launches M1 Alliance

November 8, 2000
Issue

The following motion was adopted at the November 1 meeting of the Melbourne S11 Alliance.

The success of S11 and the continuing international movement against corporate globalisation suggests the need for ongoing coordination and cooperation of communities and organisations in building this movement.

In this framework, the S11 Alliance proposes the following:

1. That we join the existing calls for a global general strike, calling for all workers to stop work, for students to walk off campus and out of school and for all people to mobilise against corporate tyranny on May 1, 2001.

2. That we work with as many organisations and movements across Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and internationally in promoting this mobilisation as a focus for the movement.

3. That we engage in discussion to build the broadest possible alliance for this mobilisation, on the basis of agreed upon issues and demands.

4. That in Melbourne we project as a focus for the variety of actions on May 1 a blockade and anti-corporate festival at a corporate target to be decided upon by the Alliance.

5. That this meeting of the S11 Alliance launches an M1 Alliance to participate in organising May 1, understanding that we are still linking our name to the S11 Alliance.

6. We will seek the support of all progressive groups and individuals, including Trades Hall and all trade unions, green, feminist, queer, disabled, unemployed, student, internationalist and indigenous groups and activists.
