Students join Resistance

Resistance held stalls at numerous university Orientation Weeks between February 14 and 18.

Twenty people joined Resistance at the University of Newcastle. Western Sydney Resistance joined 10 people at the University of Western Sydney Nepean (Rydalmere), five people at UWS Nepean (Kingswood) and three people at UWS Nepean (Werrington).

At Orientation Day at Curtin University and Murdoch University on February 16, Perth Resistance joined eight and 13 people respectively. Image displays of Che Guevara and the Resistance-organised high school walkouts against Pauline Hanson in 1998 inspired and attracted students.

Protest against Ruddock

MELBOURNE — Resistance is organising a protest action against federal immigration minister Philip Ruddock when he visits Melbourne on March 2.

Responding to recent proposals to use refugees as fruit pickers, Melbourne Resistance organiser Sarah Peart said, "We have to reject the government using refugees and immigrants as scapegoats for economic problems one day and as cheap labour the next".

The protest will demand a just immigration policy, and will highlight the Coalition and Labor's support for policies which attack the rights of asylum seekers and "illegal" immigrants. Peart said, "Against a back-drop of hype against 'boat people', the government is implementing things which Pauline Hanson only talked about".

The protest will start at 8:30pm at the Auditorium, Knox Community Arts Centre, Bayswater. Phone (03) 9639 8622 to put your name on a phone tree.

Degrees for sale

ADELAIDE — Adelaide University has offered all who applied for entrance this year a fee-paying place should they not be accepted on their academic results.

Every degree is for sale, except the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery. The number of fee-paying places available is not specified.

The most expensive degree is a Bachelor of Dental Surgery, at $102,500. The cheapest is the two-year long Diploma of Wine Marketing, at $22,400. With a spare $33,600 you could get yourself a Bachelor of Arts. An engineering degree would set you back $66,000.

So much for everyone having access to education regardless of their wealth!
