Refugees For Profit?

Tuesday, August 30, 2011 - 16:30 to 19:30

Australia's detention centres, such as Villawood and Christmas Island, are run by Serco, a British multinational corporation. The Guardian has called Serco "the biggest company you've never head of". Along with transport, health, technology and military contracts and corporations, Serco runs private prisons in the UK, Germany and Australia. The Sydney Morning Herald reported last week that Serco has been fined by the Immigration Department every month of 2010-11 for failing to meet contract goals. Serco has also been frequently criticized for inadequate services and inhuman treatment of refugees.

This forum will discuss the issues with a privitised detention system and how Human Rights are affected. The speakers are:

Antony Lowenstein
Journalist and Author of 'My Israel Question' and 'The Blogging Revolution'.

Ian Rintoul
Longtime activist with the Refugee Action Coalition

As per usual, we will be heading over to Hermann's Bar after wards to continue the discussion.

This is a joint event of the The Political Economy Society and The Anti-Racism Collective.
