Protests against coal, for real action on climate change, for the rights of refugees and for a binding vote in support of equal marriage rights took place outside the ALP conference in Melbourne on July 25.

The largest rally, for refugee rights heard from Afghan refugee Mohamad Ali Bacquiri and Tamil refugee Arun Mylvaganum. Michele O'Neill from the TCFUA, and a delegate to the conference, spoke at the protest against Bill Shorten's proposal to adopt Abbott's "turn backs" policy if Labor is elected.

More than 1000 protesters took part in the rallies.
