The US Declaration of Independence declares: “When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government”.
Err, like now, when we have just seen the racist, misogynist, billionaire bully Donald Trump “elected” US president by only 25% of the eligible vote and with 700,000 fewer votes that his opponent Hilary Clinton?
When the majority of US residents did not vote for either of these two candidates of the richest 1%?
When popular progressive candidate Bernie Sanders was cheated out of pre-selection by Democratic Party officialdom?
When 72% of voters exit-polled said they thought that the economic system was “rigged to the advantage of the rich and powerful” and yet the only viable presidential choice they were presented with were two candidates for the same rich and powerful?
When 61% of US voters felt that “traditional parties and politicians don’t care about people like me” and they wanted power to be taken from the rich and powerful?
When President-elect Trump is promising to give the rich and powerful more tax cuts, which will only make them richer and more powerful?
When Trump is filling his administration with lobbyists for the same rich and powerful and people who are committed to destroying social rights and the environment at an even greater rate than before?
Isn’t this the sort of scenario in which the people are so unrepresented and mistreated that they have not just the right, but the duty to revolt and overthrow the rich and powerful?
It certainly would be in the interest of the majority in the US and the majority of the world’s population for such a revolt to take place and succeed. If fact, when you think about it, because the US is the country that monopolises global use of resources and has the biggest military might, such a revolt is desperately needed.
Such a revolt would spark a global overthrow of the far too rich and powerful minority.
The #notmypresident demonstrations that continue to sweep the US after the Trump election might not be a revolutionary movement to overthrow the rule of the rich and powerful, but they point to a revolution that the world’s majority needs. They could become early steps in that direction.
Green Left Weekly is fully committed to the idea that the world's majority have the right and the need to overthrow the now clearly unsustainable rule of the rich and powerful. And those conscious of this need have a duty to work towards such a revolt.
