Rallying for native title

SYDNEY — More than 300 people rallied at the Town Hall steps on November 21 to support native title and Aboriginal land rights. Speakers included Ian Cohen, NSW Greens MP; Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans from the Australian Democrats; Peter O'Brien from Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation; David Boyd from Radio 2SER; Resistance; and the Democratic Socialist Party.

Speakers highlighted the need to continue campaigning, regardless of the fate of John Howard's anti-native title legislation in the Senate. The rally was organised by Resistance and the Democratic Socialist Party and sponsored by ANTaR, Ian Cohen, Tranby College and Women for Wik.

Two days earlier, more than 500 people packed Parramatta Town Hall in Sydney's west to hear Aboriginal campaigner Noel Pearson explain why a growing number of people are opposed to Howard's 10-point plan.
