Rally supports Palestinian rights

By Jim McIlroy

BRISBANE — The hypocrisy of Western governments regarding the Middle East was highlighted at a rally in King George Square on April 5, focussing on the rights of the Palestinian people to their own state.

Sponsored by the Gulf Action Coalition, the rally heard speakers including former senator George Georges and Brisbane Palestinian community representative Mohamad Abdalla condemn Israeli repression in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and criticise the US-led war on Iraq, while nothing has been done in the UN to pressure Israel on Palestinian human rights.

Speakers called on the Australian government to support the Palestinians' right to their own independent state and for humanitarian aid to the Kurdish people.

A Palestinian flag was raised to symbolise support for the formation a free state of Palestine.
