Rally supports abortion rights

By Robyn Marshall

BRISBANE — Around 100 supporters of abortion rights rallied in the King George Square on April 24 as part of a national weekend of action for women's right to choose. The rally called on the Queensland government to remove abortion from the criminal code.

Speakers included prominent abortion rights activist Una Liddy, and Cynthia Kennedy, the National Union of Students' (Qld) women's officer.

Katrina Barben from Children By Choice noted the pledge by ALP state opposition leader Peter Beattie to restore CBC's funding, which was abolished last year by the Borbidge government. While Labor's promise is welcome, she said, "we would much prefer repeal of anti-abortion laws".

Barben warned that a re-elected Coalition government may introduce legislation to tighten abortion laws, especially for late-term procedures. She urged supporters of abortion rights to prepare for new attacks and called on people to join Children By Choice. Phone (07) 3357 5377 for more information.
