Rally for Refugees - Bring Them Here! End Offshore Processing

Sunday, October 8, 2017 - 14:00 to 16:00

RAC’s next major rally calling to Bring Them Here will be Sun Oct 8, 2pm, State Library.

Speakers include
Richard Di Natale - Leader of Australian Greens
Taqi Azra - Hazara refugee and NUW organiser
Yasmin and Shawfikul - Australian Burmese Rohingyan Organisation
Craig McGregor - Victorian Allied Health Professionals Association
David Johns - ex Manus teacher
Max Costello - member of Labor 4 Refugees and Workplace Health and Safety Lawyer.

The rally is calling to Bring the Refugees on Manus and Nauru to safety in Australia, and to put an end to offshore processing and mandatory detention.

It is crystal clear from the leaked Trump and Turnbull transcript that the US refugee deal is a sham. Manus was declared illegal well over a year ago, and is supposed to ‘close’ again at the end of October, but the refugees will still be there.

Refugees on Manus have been protesting for weeks over the siege of Foxtrot compound that is trying to force them to Lorengau. Refugees who have been forced there live in fear of ongoing serious attacks. Refugees on Nauru have are also continuing their protests calling for freedom and safety.

PNG and Nauru are unwilling and unable to permanently resettle refugees, and both are dangerous places for refugees to live.

Hamed, a 31 year old Iranian was found hanging from a tree in Lorengau in August, his is the seventh death offshore. In June the Australian government agreed to pay compensation to refugees illegally imprisoned on Manus Island. It is an admission that the Australian government is responsible, but no amount of money can compensate for the damage done. Four years of asylum seekers lives have been stolen and the crime for which compensation is being paid is continuing.

To achieve real justice we are demanding Australia #BringThemHere
