By Gregory Christopher BRISBANE — A lunchtime rally is being organised in Musgrave Park on October 19 in support of a proposed Aboriginal cultural centre at Musgrave Park. It has been 11 years since the proposal first went to the Brisbane City Council. Since 1985, the BCC and state governments have stalled the project. While the Department of Aboriginal Affairs said it would fund the centre, the then Joh Bjelke-Peterson government did not move on the project. In 1987, the Brisbane High School and the parents and citizens group lobbied for the centre, and in 1991, BCC Lord Mayor Jim Soorley said he would lease the tennis court area. In 1993, the centre was again approved by the BCC, and a social and environmental study was set up. The study was still not completed by September. Duncan Johnson, chairperson of the Aboriginal Musgrave Park Corporation, said that a cultural centre would bring many benefits, not just to the Aboriginal community.
