Karen Engle directs a Human Rights Centre at the University of Texas law school. Since 1999, the UN Security Council has passed at least 17 resolutions on the protection of civilians, children and women in war. Professor Engle will discuss the role of the international women's rights movement, and argue that calls for gendered analysis of war and peace have led to a nearly exclusive focus on the harm of rape and sexual violence. She will also consider the UN's use of celebrity diplomacy.
