Public meeting: Secure & civil society?

Friday, September 30, 2011 - 12:00 to 17:00

The UK riots have been all over our media. Many have been saying that the 'welfare state' is to blame. We know that in Australia there are plenty of pundits who like to attack so-called 'dole bludgers'; and both sides of politics have been toughening their stance for a number of years now, arming themselves with plenty of 'sticks' but providing very few 'carrots'. The Federation of Community Legal Centres, the National Welfare Rights Network and the Justice and International Mission Unit (of the Uniting Church in Victoria and Tasmania) have endorsed a half day discussion on the future of social security which is being run by Social Security Rights Victoria (SSRV).

'Red and Orange rooms', First Floor, Multicultural Hub, 506 Elizabeth St, Melbourne (between Therry & Victoria Streets) opposite the Queen Victoria Market.
