Public meeting: Bogan Delusion with David Nicholls.

Wednesday, June 15, 2011 - 18:30

Nothing defies cultured Australia's sense of itself more than the bogan: that boorish, racist, drunken, sexist, bethonged, Barnesy-loving embarrassment out there in the back blocks. Part travelogue, part social critique, The Bogan Delusion explores the cultural and social landscape of Australia in 2011. David Nichols reveals, with searing analysis and sharp wit, that the bogan so widely feared is nothing more than a bogey: a convenient excuse for many to never venture beyond the cafe-lined cocoon of the inner city. What is believing in the bogan doing to Australia?

David Nicholls is saying the prejudices of those of us who think too highly of ourselves to recoginise them are given away by the term and treatment of the "bogan" as an inferior and less worthy part of society. Compassion for refugees, etc is valued by our peers and gives us credibility, but for our own societies "other outsiders" we don't care. For example-and these are my own words now-notice how most of us reacted recently when children were sent to Malaysia by a heartless government- but no one mentioned that the much-needed foster parent would now be given to the one who cheated the system-and not the homeless Australian children who would miss out if the children had stayed in Australia. Why? Because we are emulating our hero's-not so much observing reality as it is.
